This year, in July, we will be completing 3 years of our cooperation with The Ocean Clenup (TOC) foundation (www.theoceancleanup.com). The main objective of this work is to generate numerical results of significant height, period and direction of waves, as well as magnitude and direction of the surface and surface currents and Stokes drift, which are used in estimates of the drift and accumulation of debris of plastic. The TOC foundation has developed a floating system that captures plastic debris in the oceans. The first system was launched on the water in October 2018, in the center of the area known as the “Great Pacific Garbage Patch” (GPGP) located between Hawaii and California. Estimates of the TOC foundation are that 80,000 tonnes of plastic are floating in GPGP.
